Puppy Availability at Ekara Beagles
As a rule, we only breed one or two litters per year. We only breed a litter when we are hoping to keep a puppy for our show team. This means that, unfortunately, we usually do not have puppies available.
Upon your quest for a Beagle Puppy, it is important to consider the following:
- Breeders that always have puppies available, usually do not breed ethically. They breed to satisfy a market, not to improve the breed.
- In South Africa, there are numerous puppy scams. Make sure you cultivate a relationship with your breeder, and get to meet them, or at the very least video call with them, before paying anything.
- It is important that you research your breeder of choice, find a breeder who breeds the type and quality of puppy you would like to own, and make sure the breeder meets your standards.
- When you book a puppy from a breeder, the breeder should, at minimum, be a KUSA registered breeder, preferably be a member of the Beagle Association of Gauteng too, do Genetic Health Testing on their breeding lines, and ensure that every puppy is Vet checked, Microchipped, Vaccinated and Dewormed.
- Breeders that do not do Genetic Health Testing, usually are not invested in the wellbeing of the breed. Breeders that do, can provide proof thereof and are knowledgeable about Genetic Health Issues in the breed. - Pocket Beagles do not exist. When a breeder advertises a puppy as a Pocket Beagle, it most likely is a puppy bred from sickly and small lines, and not something you would desire. The official Breed Standard of the Beagle advises that Beagles can be between 33cm and 40cm height at withers.
Generally, a Reputable Breeder will not have a puppy available when you are looking for one. We advise that you select your breeder of choice, and add your name to their waiting list. This may mean that you have to wait for a puppy, which isn't always fun, but it would also mean that you get a well-bred puppy from proven bloodlines, a puppy that was planned for, not an accident.
How does the waiting list work?
By completing our "New Owner Interest Form", you will automatically be added to a list of interested people. We may have a couple of questions for you, based on your answers in the form, which we will ask before we approve / deny your addition to the waiting list. We do not always answer each enquiry immediately, but rest assured that we do consider each of them when we do expect a litter.
Generally, when we do expect a litter, we reach out to people on the waiting list, to confirm that they are still interested. Once interest is confirmed, and once the litter is born, puppies will be assigned to families. We always reserve the right to the first pick in every litter. Thereafter return homes get preference. Thereafter, the oldest entries on the waiting list are considered first, depending on your preferences and circumstances.
Our puppies are assigned to the most suitable home for them, considering your preferences, family and circumstances, and the puppy's personality and temperament. Puppies are assigned around the age of 6-8 weeks, and will only join their families around the age of 8-10 weeks, when they are ready to do so.
Please note that we do not take deposits before a litter is born. Bookings are not confirmed until a deposit has been paid, which would be when the puppies are slightly older. Deposits paid are non-refundable, unless Ekara Beagles are not in the position to provide you with a puppy.
